Frequently Asked Questions
What does an IRTEC HGV Inspection Technician licence demonstrate?
An IRTEC HGV Inspection Technician licence demonstrates that you have been assessed against recognised standards for inspecting HGVs and identifying defects that could affect vehicle safety and roadworthiness. The licence is accredited for 5 years.
Why is the Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness important for HGV inspectors?
The Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness helps inspection technicians understand their role in keeping commercial vehicles safe and legally compliant. The course explains how roadworthiness, daily checks, defect reporting and maintenance responsibilities fit together in real fleet operations.
What will I learn about HGV defects and MOT criteria?
You will work through minor, major and dangerous defects, the HGV Inspection Manual, MOT criteria and prohibitions. Practical demonstrations help you understand how these requirements are applied during an actual vehicle inspection.
Does the training include practical HGV inspection?
Yes. Day 2 is focused heavily on practical inspection work and includes the inspection routine, safety-critical items, paperwork, legal documents, tools and equipment, headlamp aim, roller brake testing and emissions. You will also complete a practical inspection and stage test.
What HGV vehicle is needed for the practical training?
For Day 2, you need access to an HGV over 3,500kg GVW. Both a rigid vehicle and tractor unit are acceptable.
How does the course prepare me for the IRTEC assessment?
The training combines underpinning knowledge with practical inspection activities. You will cover areas such as defect categorisation, inspection documentation, safety-critical components and testing procedures before completing practical inspection and stage-test activities.
Can an experienced LCV or Bus & Coach technician take the HGV Inspection Technician route?
Potentially, yes. The entry criteria allow relevant experience from related sectors such as LCV, HGV, or Bus & Coach to be considered. Candidates can qualify through either the required industry experience or a relevant Level 3 Inspection Technician qualification plus post-qualification experience.
What are OCRS and Earned Recognition, and why should an inspection technician understand them?
OCRS and Earned Recognition form part of the wider operator-compliance picture. Understanding them helps inspection technicians see how effective vehicle inspections and maintenance contribute to an operator’s overall compliance and road-safety responsibilities.
What paperwork should an HGV Inspection Technician understand?
The course covers practical documentation including inspection sheets, defect and rectification records, maintenance schedules, legal documents and inspection paperwork. This is important because a good inspection is not just about finding defects—it also involves recording and communicating them correctly.
Is PSV Inspection Technician training different from HGV Inspection Technician training?
The overall two-day structure is similar, but the practical content is tailored to the vehicle type. The PSV route covers the PSV Inspection Manual, PSV-specific inspection requirements and practical assessment, with access to a PSV vehicle of 3.5 tonnes GVW or more required on Day 2.
