Overview
The Commercial Tyre Technician qualification is designed for technicians working within the commercial vehicle tyre industry who are responsible for inspecting, fitting, repairing, and maintaining commercial vehicle tyres safely and professionally. This route is intended for technicians who carry out maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair of Large Commercial Vehicles, Bus & Coach or Heavy Vehicle Trailer.
Technicians must complete the specified practical tasks and a 30-question underpinning knowledge test.
Practical Assessment Units
The IRTEC Service Maintenance Technician practical assessment consists of:
- Braking Systems – 50 minutes
- Engine Electrical Systems – 50 minutes
- Engine Mechanical Systems – 50 minutes
- Hydraulic / Pneumatic Systems – 50 minutes
- Wheel Alignment & Steering – 50 minutes
Knowledge Test
Candidates must complete a 30-question underpinning knowledge test covering:
- Operating principles of relevant vehicle systems
- Methods and techniques used to remove, replace and measure components
- Use of tools and specialist equipment
- Safe working practices

A Level 3 Inspection Technician qualification (SVQ, NVQ, or VCQ) plus at least 1 year of post-qualification experience in an appropriate role.

Application Form
The course is designed to train and prepare PSV inspection technician to a standard where they can undertake the IRTEC PSV inspection technician assessment and gain the accredited 5-year IRTEC licence for the inspection of PSV vehicles. Along with knowledge of the good vehicle operators commitments to road safety.
The course duration is 2 days of 6 hours training. The second day requires access to a PSV vehicle has a GVW of 3.5 Tonnes or more is acceptable.

This IRTEC route is intended for technicians who carry out maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair on:
- Large Commercial Vehicle
- Bus & Coach
Skills and Knowledge Requirements
The minimum entry requirement is:
- 3 years’ industrial experience
OR
- A Level 3 S/NVQ (or equivalent qualification) plus at least one year’s experience in a relevant industrial environment.
The technician must be able to work unsupervised and ideally be in full-time employment to ensure they are familiar with the skills, knowledge and techniques associated with the IRTEC Advanced Technician level.
Assessment
In order to achieve an IRTEC licence, a technician must first complete a 30-question underpinning knowledge test at an IRTEC-approved assessment centre.
Once the theory test is completed successfully, the technician has 12 months to complete all practical assessments.
Practical assessments can be carried out at an IRTEC-approved centre or at the workplace (additional charges may be applicable) by an IRTEC-approved assessor.
Practical Assessments
The practical assessments for the Advanced Technician licence are:
- Engine Electrical Systems – 60 minutes
- Mechanical Systems – 60 minutes
- Braking Systems – 60 minutes
- Chassis Systems – 60 minutes
- Electrical Systems – 60 minutes
