About the Scheme
The Maintenance Provision Rating Scheme (MPRS) is an independent recognition created by the industry for the industry with support from industry bodies, DVSA and the Office of Traffic Commissioners. Aimed at workshops and maintenance facilities of all sizes, MPRS is a single rating scheme that gauges performance of current facilities and workforce quality through comprehensive audits and collective evidence.
MPRS puts the spotlight on improving current standards across workshops and maintenance facilities across the nation, highlighting non-compliant and unsafe practices that compromise safety and standards within the commercial industry.
Endorsed by the sector, an MPRS rating reflects the competency of a workshop’s facilities and technical expertise. The higher the rating, the greater the confidence operators should have in the competences.
The Ratings Explained
Participating in an MPRS audit demonstrates to your clients and stakeholders that you are willing to have your facilities and workforce quality audited by an independent entity backed by DVSA.
MPRS is an industry-recognised performance indicator workshops and maintenance facilities can use to demonstrate their competency, compliance and credibility, thus cementing your reputation amongst your clients and trust amongst the wider society.
Qualified
For workshops providing essential maintenance and repair services. This level ensures that basic tools, equipment, and staff competencies are in place to meet minimum industry compliance standards.
Bronze
For workshops offering a broader range of maintenance services, including capabilities for electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles. This level ensures workshops are equipped with advanced tools, facilities, and trained staff to meet industry standards.
Silver
For medium-sized workshops offering comprehensive maintenance services. It introduces more rigorous requirements for staff qualifications, workshop facilities, and equipment, ensuring workshops meet higher operational and safety standards.
Gold
For large workshops or those offering advanced services, ensuring exceptional standards in staff qualifications, facilities, equipment, and communication. These workshops cater to both conventional and cutting-edge vehicle technologies, reflecting their higher operational capacities.
Bronze
For workshops with the most advanced facilities, the highest levels of staff qualifications, and full compliance with the latest industry standards. This level is suited for operators at the cutting edge of maintenance technology and practices, ensuring full readiness for future vehicle trends, including electric, hybrid, and hydrogen-powered systems.

Qualified – Basic Workshop Compliance
Purpose: Entry-level accreditation for workshops offering essential maintenance and repairs.
Key Criteria:
- Staff: At least one staff member must have completed:
- HSV/PSV Inspection course (within 5 years)
- Maintenance & Repair course (within 5 years)
- All staff must be qualified or meet Grandfather Rights.
- Facilities: Hard-standing level workspace required.
- Equipment:
- Access to basic tools like RBT, headlamp beam tester, emissions and OBD testers.
- Full tool range for vehicle types serviced.
- Calibrated torque-wrench.
Bronze – Broader Capabilities Including Alternative Fuels
Purpose: Suited for workshops with broader services, including electric/hydrogen vehicle work.
Key Criteria:
- Staff: In addition to Level 1, must also have:
- 1 engineer trained in Electric/Hybrid awareness.
- More than 1 engineer trained in Gas/Hydrogen awareness.
- Facilities: Includes undercover workspace and wash provisions.
- Equipment:
- Additional access to equipment with loading provisions.
- Under-vehicle inspection facilities.
- Electric/Hybrid-specific tools & PPE.
Silver – Comprehensive Medium Workshop Standards
Purpose: Mid-tier level for workshops with expanded staff training, QA, and specialist tools.
Key Criteria:
- Staff: At least:
- 50% trained in HSV/PSV and Maintenance & Repair.
- 25% in Electric/Hybrid awareness.
- More than 1 in Gas/Hydrogen awareness.
- 1 engineer per site working toward Advanced Technician status.
- CPD programme and QA process in place.
- Facilities: Undercover, fully lit bays with fume extraction.
- Equipment: All equipment must be calibrated and extensive, with specialist tools and inspection facilities.
Gold – High-Capability Large Workshops
Purpose: For advanced, large workshops with high staff competence and robust systems.
Key Criteria:
- Staff: At least:
- 75% trained in HSV/PSV and Maintenance & Repair.
- 50% in Electric/Hybrid, 25% in Gas/Hydrogen.
- At least 1 Advanced Technician per site.
- Documented CPD and QA systems.
- Communication: Clear management-to-workshop information flow.
- Facilities & Equipment: As per Level 3, with LOLER inspection arrangements.
- Additional Features: Tyre bay, wash provisions, and repair arrangements (hydraulic, refrigeration, bodywork).
Platinum – Elite Standard for Future-Ready Workshops
Purpose: Top-tier for operators at the cutting edge of maintenance technology.
Key Criteria:
- Staff: At least:
- 100% trained in HSV/PSV and Maintenance & Repair.
- 50% in Electric/Hybrid and ≥50% in Gas/Hydrogen.
- Multiple Advanced Technicians per site.
- Strong CPD, QA, and management communication systems.
- Out-of-Hours Service: All criteria must be upheld during these hours.
- Facilities & Equipment: Must match or exceed ATF standards.
- Additional Features: All Level 4 features plus:
- ADAS calibration
- LOLER inspections
- ATF-equivalent test equipment or approval
